Accounts at Penn
University Life staff may require access to a number of different systems administered by UL Technology Services, by Penn’s central computing provider (Information Systems and Computing, or ISC), or by Penn’s library system. Virtually all resources require a current user ID and password to access them.
UL Technology Services provides a wide range of services. Use of these resources is authorized and granted at the request of departmental directors and/or authorized account management staff.
PennKey and UL Account: What’s the difference?
For access to most of the central University systems, a PennKey username and password are used. The PennKey username is also used as the username for all other Penn systems, including those supported by UL Technology Services. However, they rely on a separately managed password.

For more information about obtaining, using, and resetting the password for a PennKey, please see ISC’s PennKey information page.
Dual Authentication
- All staff members are required to enroll in PennKey Two-Step Verification with Duo. This provides an added layer of protection when accessing PennKey-protected web sites and applications. VPULTS can assist you in registering for Duo.
UL Staff Accounts
UL accounts are provided for anyone requiring use of technology within the division. Many divisional offices have additional applications, databases, listservs, web content management systems (CMS), group e-mail accounts, and the like that require additional access and authorization. Please speak with your supervisor regarding additional access to these.
UL Accounts and Security
Account owners are responsible for all the activity on their account. Accounts are assigned to individual users; no one other than the account owner is to use the account. VPUL users are limited to one active login session; and will be required to logout of open sessions if they try to login to two resources at the same time.
Account holders are required to keep their passwords and account information secret and take reasonable precautions against unauthorized access. Users are required to respect the privacy and integrity of other users, systems, and data, and need to be aware of Penn’s computing policies:
How do I request an account for a new staff member?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
What do I need to do when an employee leaves my office?
When an employee leaves the division, it is important to notify VPULTS so that their account can be properly deactivated and any necessary data can be migrated to a new location. To request that a former staff member’s account be deactivated, please fill out the form at Account Management.
UL Work-Study Accounts
How do I request a new account for a work-study student?
To request a new VPUL account for a new staff member or student worker, please visit our Account Management site.
My work-study students are not able to log in; what do I do?
Work-study accounts are only active for one year. If a student returns for a subsequent term, the account will need to be reactivated. To reactivate an account, please visit our Account Management site.
E-mail Accounts
How can I request a new individual e-mail account?
New e-mail accounts should generally be requested when a staff member gets a VPUL account. If a staff member does not initially need an e-mail account, but it is later determined that he or she does need one, you can request one by visiting our Request Assistance webpage.
How can I request a new group e-mail account?
To request a new group e-mail account, please visit our Request Assistance web page. You will need to provide us with the full name of the account (as it will appear in a recipient’s inbox) as well as three choices for the name of the account.
- The latter is what appears before the @ symbol in the address. For example, “tech” would be the account name for the tech@pobox.upenn.edu address.
- Group accounts will use the @pobox.upenn.edu namespace, and account names must be between three (3) and eight (8) characters. We request that you send three options for your account name in case your first choice is not available.
How can I give someone access to an existing group e-mail account?
Please visit our Request Assistance webpage.
